Muscle Sparing Knee Replacement

Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee arthritis occurs when the cartilage on the joint surface breaks down, leading to pain, stiffness, deformity, and reduced mobility. When conservative treatments are no longer effective, knee replacement surgery can restore function and significantly improve quality of life. Before considering surgery, many patients find relief through a variety of nonoperative treatments, such as:

  • Bracing
  • Physical therapy
  • Joint health supplements (e.g., glucosamine, chondroitin)
  • Oral anti-inflammatories
  • Steroid injections
  • Hyaluronic acid injections

Dr. Olson performs muscle-sparing (subvastus) knee replacement surgery, a modern approach that avoids cutting major muscles. This technique often leads to faster recovery, less postoperative pain, and improved early mobility.

To ensure optimal outcomes, Dr. Olson utilizes advanced surgical technology, including robotics and computer navigation, during both partial and total joint replacement procedures. He also utilizes a multimodal approach to pain control including spinal anesthetic, regional nerve blocks, local pain medicine injections, oral anti-inflammatories, and when needed opioid pain medications.

Knee replacement surgery can often be performed at outpatient surgery centers. Many patients return home just a few hours after their procedure. When necessary, an overnight hospital stay may be recommended.
