Anterior Approach Total Hip Replacement

Hip Replacement Surgery
Hip arthritis occurs when the cartilage on the joint surface breaks down, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and loss of function. This degeneration can result from various factors, including birth deformities, prior injuries, inflammatory joint diseases, avascular necrosis, and other underlying causes.
Treatment Options
Initial treatments for hip arthritis may include:
- Activity modification
- Physical therapy
- Joint health supplements (such as glucosamine and chondroitin)
- Oral anti-inflammatory medications
- Steroid injections
When these nonoperative measures are no longer effective, total joint replacement surgery may be recommended.
Advanced Surgical Technique: Direct Anterior Approach
Dr. Olson performs hip replacement using the muscle-sparing direct anterior approach, which often results in a faster and less painful recovery compared to traditional methods. This technique uses x-ray guidance throughout the procedure for enhanced accuracy. He also utilizes a multimodal approach to pain control including spinal anesthetic, regional nerve blocks, local pain medicine injections, oral anti-inflammatories, and when needed opioid pain medications.
Outpatient Hip Replacement
Many hip replacement surgeries are now performed in surgery centers, allowing patients to return home just a few hours after the procedure. In some cases, an overnight hospital stay may be recommended for additional monitoring and support.
Preparing for Surgery
Successful joint replacement begins with careful preparation. Steps may include:
- Trying nonoperative treatments
- Optimizing overall health with your primary care doctor
- Attending a total joint education class
- A preoperative appointment with Dr. Olson
- Making a postoperative recovery plan
Recovery Process
Recovery after hip replacement typically involves:
- Regular use of ice
- Walking aids such as a walker or cane
- Physical therapy and home exercise programs
- Scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon
- Multimodal pain control
